Colorful {and responsible} Drinks

mosaic_non-alcoholic-drinks_my-recipes

If you’re like many families who will be celebrating New Year’s Eve tonight, you’ll spend the evening with friends and family — which include young children. Champagne and cocktails have long been a part of many countdown celebrations but, if you’re like us, children are present and we don’t drink.  However, we’ll still enjoy the evening with celebratory alternatives such as Mimosa d’Amore sparkling juice from After The Fall (a hostess gift I received this holiday season; I love that pretty label!).  Here are also some tasty and colorful ‘kid-friendly sippers’ (pictured above) from myrecipes.com.

I hope your Christmas was blessed, merry and colorful! It’s amazing how quickly we shift gears, and now it’s all about the New Year.  If you’re planning a party, think pink and brown.  This mouth-watering color combination continues to be very popular for interiors, events and sweet treats.  It’s a fun, welcoming palette perfect for keeping the mood light and cheery.  What a great way to start the new year!

Is your mouth watering yet?  Soft pinks are also deliciously calming.  So if your New Year’s resolution is to add more tranquility to your life, pink is a great color for your master bedroom, and it might even add a little romance, too!

Christmas In Blue

By now your holiday decorating should be complete.  But just in case you’re one of those Christmas Eve decorators, here are few more inspiration photos from the Porter House — more blue and less red.   Because if you’ve waited this late to get your decorations, blue may be the only color of mini-lights you’re going to find left at Wal-Mart.

Holiday Inspiration From The Porter House

Where’s The White Stuff?

Each holiday season I decorate my home and yard with snow in mind.  Pine green wreaths with red bows sprinkled with snow on top.  Rustic benches and outdoor wooden chairs covered with a fresh coat of the white stuff…these are a few of my favorite things.  Unfortunately, here in the Washington, DC area we have yet to see any significant snowfall, so I’ve been a little bummed.  But then I simply remembered these pictures that I took last December when we had about 4 inches of snow….and then I don’t feel so bad!

That Kennedy Center Red

The Kennedy Center has been in the news lately.  First, with the announcement that it will be the venue for The Oprah Winfrey Show during Inauguration Week.  Then, just this past weekend The Kennedy Center Honors paid tribute to Barbra Streisand, Morgan Freeman and others (shown at top).

This time of year brings back my own memories.  When I was a child, my father would take me to The Kennedy Center to see The Nutcracker. It’s been a few years since I’ve last been there, but one thing about The Kennedy Center has always stood out to me — that distinctive red.  Red carpeting, red seats and red opera house decor, all accented with white and gold.  There’s also a colorful surprise in the Hall of Nations (below) where the flags of several countries hang from the ceiling.

A trip to The Kennedy Center is always inspiring.  Here are some ideas for bringing the look into your space:

In this entryway (bhg.com) light blue is paired with red, just like some of the flags hanging in the Hall of Nations at The Kennedy Center.

In my red study, I have a white Christmas tree adorned with gold and white ornaments.  If you like this idea, go ahead and copy it!

Boxes wrapped in red, gold and white (pointclickhome.com) will add a festive touch to your home this season.

The Kennedy Center has gorgeous gold and crystal chandeliers given as gifts from Austria and Norway.  This lovely Mardella chandelier from the James R. Moder collection (lampsplus.com) is sure to add sparkle, elegance and maybe even a little envy to your dining room.

Colors For The Inaugural Dress

What dress (or dresses) will Michelle Obama wear for the inauguration?  It seems many top designers are eagerly displaying their suggestions for the elegant, soon-to-be First Lady.

Aah, decisions, decisions — but what a wonderful dilemma to have. Who wouldn’t want the nation’s finest designers offering to outfit them in couture?  As you can see by these sketches (all from wwd.com), Mrs. Obama could have a difficult time deciding, and it could all come down to color.  I’m glad to see such vibrant colors instead of subtle or muted hues.  Plenty of color inspiration here for our own inaugural outfits (I’m still trying to get a ticket) and even our homes.

Here, you’ll find some designer’s sketches and my paint picks from Sherwin Williams.

Tiffany Blue

Each year, the Christmas season brings with it new color trends and palettes.  However, one color remains a year-to-year classic.  Whether you say it’s aqua, turquoise or robin’s egg blue, call it Tiffany Blue and everyone knows what you’re talking about.  Tiffany & Co. has been around since 1837!  It’s vibrant signature blue packaging has worldwide instant recognition.  It also has us dreaming of diamonds.  Maybe that’s why it remains a classic color –  because many long to see that blue box under the tree.

Well, if you love the blue but don’t have the box, here are some ways to bring Tiffany Blue (or something close to it) into your home this holiday season:

Paint your walls with Aqueduct from Sherwin-Williams. This pretty shade of blue is not just for the bedroom either.  This year, I had two clients who selected this color for their family room.

Set your holiday table with this adorable Snow Bear plate from Mackenzie Childs. These plates pair just a hint of blue with black, a very hot color this season.  I like these plates because you can use them all winter long.

Spread it around!  This Whimsy Turquoise & Silver Collection from Z Gallerie allows you to unify your holiday decor from room to room.

Crimson and Chocolate

I just did the decor for a celebration using red and brown with a touch of amber.  This ‘crimson and chocolate’ color palette was brought to life with candles, fruit, water jewels and tons of gorgeous ribbon.  These colors are perfect for this time of year.  You’ve got a combination of red — a classic holiday hue, and brown which is a prominent color in nature right now in many places.  Also, of course, chocolate represents the flavor and color of holiday candy, cakes and cookies.  Yum!
