House of Paint
I was recently contacted by a homeowner who lives in Downtown Silver Spring, a revitalized area just north of D.C. known for its colorful outdoor spaces, trendy restaurants and shops.

This client lives in one of the many charming bungalows that sit on quiet streets just beyond the action. His goal: to create his own lively space by using bold, festive colors. Bring the noise!

When I arrived for our color consultation, the homeowner handed me a calendar. It had gorgeous photos of Guatemala including houses and scenery enveloped in vivid, saturated hues. We quickly got to work, and a while later we created a palette that included a variety of vibrant colors.

In each room we also painted the ceiling using a lighter tint of the chosen wall color.

This was a really fun project. Best of all, my courageous client loves how the colors turned out and he’s happy with his home — that’s what it’s all about.
Some of the colors used in this project:

Mixing Colors

These spaces are all about layering colors, and I just love the casual, ‘mix and match’ style.

It’s easy to create a colorful space by using accessories. Or paint unexpected surfaces such as the trim and floor. Start with your favorite hue then layer on a few others. Pretty soon, you’ll be living with color in a room that you love.

Styled In Color
I am in total awe of this insanely colorful ‘concept salon’ designed by Garry Cohn.

The Style Club in Dublin, Ireland has got to be the most energetic, color-packed salon on earth. It definitely pushes the limits of design, color and pattern — but that’s the whole idea.

This cutting edge establishment offers daring trends in hair styling — and the interior was designed to reflect just that. I’m really loving the pink giraffe print on the ceiling.

This is more than just getting your hair done {did I mention the live DJ?}. This is an experience. Wow!

Transformers Boys Room
Attention Moms: If you have a son who’s crazy about the movie Transformers…

…today, over at Design Dazzle, I’ve blogged about a really fun furniture collection that would be a great beginning for a Transformers-inspired boy’s room.

Mixter Max bedroom furniture by Powell is both colorful and multi-functional, just like the Transformers robots themselves. Click Here to check out the entire post!
Celebrate {With} Color!
I get so much inspiration from colorful celebrations such as these designs featured in Ceremony magazine:

The setting above features bold, bright colors. LOVE the orange and fuchsia — and the flower appliques. Below, the design is more subdued with softer hues, but the look is still dramatic and fun thanks to delicious mint-green stripes and candy displays. And, of course, both floral centerpieces are amazing.

Professional designs like these can give us tons of ideas for colorful entertaining @ home!

Cherry and Chartreuse
Two fun, summer colors that make a very eye-catching duo:

1. stationary by pixelimpress, 2. lamp, 3. dresser, 4. storage box, 5. pot, 6. label, 7. rocking chair, 8. serving bowl, 9. baker’s rack, 10. floral arrangement, 11. coffee table, 12. fresh cherries, 13. garden stool
Bold Beach Color
When it comes to decorating a beach house, we often think of natural materials and soft, pastel colors…

…but some people think outside the sand box and go for bolder hues.

And why not? A beach house should be about fun and excitement. Relaxation is important too, but the ocean waves will take care of that.

Whether your house is at the shore or much farther inland, these beautiful beach houses show us that we don’t have to be cautious when it comes to coastal color.

July 4th Crab Feast
Here in the D.C. area, Fourth of July celebrations typically involve a good ole’ fashioned crab feast, featuring Maryland Blue Crabs straight from the Chesapeake Bay. After all, babies born here learn to crack open crabs before they can walk. OK, that may just be an urban legend, but there are plenty of kids {including my own} around here who can open a crab in under 5 seconds. So to honor the traditional crab feast, and to inspire one of your own this weekend, here’s a sizzling mood board that will get your celebration started:
