Colorful Painted Stripes
This colorful space is not only a lesson in patience {tons of taping-off I’m sure}, but it demonstrates how color can be creative as well as re-created…

…In this boy’s room, designer Karen Harris used the striped lamp shades as inspiration for the painted wall treatment. The colorful stripes fill this room with loads of energy and excitement, but I also appreciate the red space above the headboard and the white bedding, as these two elements help to quiet down all of the action. Love it!

Red and Gray Bedroom
I’m loving this glam bedroom, and here’s why red and gray is such a perfect color scheme for your master bedroom:

The juxtaposition of red and gray create an energetic yet serene effect. It’s an elegant color balance that promotes what I call “RR & R” – the idea that our bedroom should help us rejuvenate upon waking up, and help us relax at the end of a long day. And if you’re married, your bedroom should encourage romance!

Red is a stimulating hue that can help us feel energetic and motivated when it’s time to get out of bed and get going. It’s benefits are two-fold because red is also the color of passion and romance. Who wouldn’t want that in their bedroom?

On the other hand, gray is a calming, neutral color that helps to keep red in check. Gray is becoming very popular these days, but I think it looks best when paired with a dramatic color because used alone, it can make a room appear drab.

In this bedroom {or any bedroom}, gray adds a tranquility that’s perfect for when you want to wind down. Gray introduces a modern feel that is also wonderfully subtle and gentle.

The key to a red and gray bedroom is using the right amount of each color. In this bedroom, I love how a light gray tint is used as the dominant color. Red, which can be overpowering in large doses, is used as the accent. But what also adds interest to this space is the variation of these two colors: dark gray trim, a metallic silver bed and accessories. Likewise for red — that gorgeous dresser is accented in fuchsia, as are some of the other accessories.

I believe that our bedroom should be the first room in our home that we decorate. However, all to often it’s the last place that gets our attention. Just remember that this is the first place we see in the morning and the last place we see at night. With our busy schedules, rest and romance is at a premium. So how can you get more of both? A red and gray bedroom could very well be a great start!

Boys Football Buffet
Summer’s almost over, so I’ve declared it Tween Party Week here at Color Sizzle! My last post featured a Girls Spa Party, so today this one’s for the guys {NOTE: this set-up also works indoors and makes for a great Superbowl Party}!

Are you ready for some football?? My boys sure are, so I styled this snack buffet to help them celebrate the season with their friends. If you’ve ever hosted a bunch of boys over for a friendly game of football, you know they get pretty hungry!

One thing I know — boys like things things simple, so I didn’t put a lot of fuss into this one . Well, maybe I did just a little {can’t help it…it’s the designer in me}. I purchased the ‘football field’ tablecloth and banner from the party store, and reinforced the green and orange color theme with the candy and accessories.

I used scrapbooking paper to make labels for the water bottles, and the sliders and brownies were store-bought {I added the green M&Ms}.

A day of fun, food, friends…and football, of course.

Girls Spa Party
Today, over at Design Dazzle you can see my post on how I designed a really fun and colorful spa at home for tween girls….

It begins in my master bathroom…

and ends in the basement {aka the ‘Crazy Sexy Cool’ Luxe Lounge}:

{HOT IDEA: I took a picture of one of the pillows, printed it out, and used it as a custom wrapper for the chocolate bars.}

A space to create, inspire and dream.
Color That Sticks
I’m just back from a trip to Iowa — a state I never thought I’d have a reason to visit…

That is, until my sons qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics which were held in Des Moines this summer. So off we went, driving almost half-way across the country in the Suburban.

During our stay, while enjoying some free time, I stumbled upon one the most colorfully amazing stores I’d ever seen — Sticks. Maybe you’ve heard of it. The company was started in 1992 by Iowa artist Sarah Grant.

Sticks now employs over 100 people, including 30 painters who work in the company’s Des Moines studio creating the distinctive whimsical, colorful furniture pieces and accessories that the company is now known for.

At the Sticks store, color and art literally greet you right at the front doors:

Several of the company’s painters contributed to the store’s exterior art. Amazing!

Aside from carrying their own pieces, the Sticks store also sells items from outside artists.

Luckily, you don’t have to travel to Iowa to purchase items made by Sticks. They sell their wares in furniture stores and boutiques across the country, and soon you’ll be able to purchase their items via the company’s website.

It was so refreshing to have spent a little time in a beautiful store that embraces bold color combinations and a mix-n-match style. That’s definitely the Color Sizzle way!
A big thanks to Sarah and Dee at the store!

A Pop of Purple
Love this space from Baltimore designer Patrick Sutton.
{from Patrick Sutton Interior Design}
The lighting fixture and draperies add just the perfect pop of purple — well, violet really. Being that I heart any shade of purple, this cozy space has my name {and maybe yours, too} written all over it.
