2009 September | Color Sizzle

Small Space. Big Color.

Yes, your small space can be big on color!

New York City designer Lindsey Harper was definitely not color shy when she turned her small Upper East Side apartment into a jewel box.  Just inside the door {above}, her ebullient entryway is filled to the max with colorful accessories and bold patterns, and it doesn’t stop there:

Lindsey also used a hefty dose of bold color and pattern in her living room, where a sapphire sofa takes center stage.  Some of the same colors are repeated in the bedroom.

The small bathroom was also given the works:  monogrammed towels, a snake-skin accent table, a red retro telephone and zebra wallpaper.

Design Tip: Lindsey left the majority of her wall space white and brought in colors through the furniture, fabrics and accessories.  She also repeated the same hues from one room to the next, which brings harmony to the entire home.

A small space that sizzles with color — love it!

Decorating With Pumpkins

When it comes to autumn decorating, I usually begin with pumpkins.  They’re sculptural, easy to embellish, and they can serve as a starting point for a colorful outdoor display or indoor centerpiece.  These pretty pumpkins {above} are from bhg.com {except for the center photo, which is from the Porter House}.

And here are some other fun ideas from goodhousekeeping.com.  What can you come up with?  I’d love to hear about your ideas!

White {Hot} House

Yes, I know.  The name of my blog is COLOR Sizzle and I am passionate about color.  However, every once in a while I come across a white space {gasp!} that I totally love.

This home’s stunning interior was designed by Lynne Scalo — who’s signature style includes the skillful use of white.   What I love is that, even though you’ll find very little color here {unless you see color in shades of white, black and taupe}, there is a clever infusion of texture and pattern, and that’s what makes this space sizzle.

Interesting accessories, occasional pops of muted color, and the furniture’s bold lines also add to this home’s appeal.  There is also a great mix of fabrics and materials:  leather, silk, velvet, wood, acrylic and a shag rug…just to name a few.

White spaces can often look cold and sterile, but that’s just not the case here.  This home is warm, inviting and has dimension thanks to the thoughtful combination of furnishings.  Although I love bold colors best, this is a style that I can truly appreciate.

Blue: A Hot Hue For Christmas 2009

bluechristmas

By all indications, blue will be a hot color for Christmas 2009.  We’ve seen blues the past couple of years for the holiday season.  Colors such as navy, aqua, silver blue and baby blue will remain popular choices this year, as well.  Good news for you blue lovers — and for those people {including me} who bought a bunch of blue Christmas decorations last year!

Flower Power

Early this morning I was working in my office when something caught my eye:

When I looked up from my desk, the flower ornament that hangs on the door was all lit up and sparkling.  As it turns out, the morning sun was streaming in through my home’s palladian window in the foyer.  The door to my office happened to be open at just the right angle…and voila!  A delightful surprise!

My amethyst, acrylic ornament was being powered by the sun.  How’s that for flower power?  I quickly grabbed my camera as to not forget this image.  I’m rarely in my office that early in the morning {I’m a night owl}.  I think it’s amazing how God uses the simplest of things to reveal His beauty…and quite often it’s right in front of us.

Back-To-School Tablescape

This Labor Day weekend will mark the “unofficial” end of summer.  So, my latest tablescape is all about color, whimsy…

…and did you notice that it has a ‘back-to-school’ theme?  What better way to get your kids ready to hit those books — they’ll be thrilled, right?  The best thing about this tablescape is that you can use inexpensive school supplies.  You may even have some extra items you’ve already bought.  Here, I used colored pencils, sticky notes and colored notebook paper.

I also used scrapbooking paper and photocopies of a composition book to embellish the glass vases.  Fresh sunflowers and balloons complete this festive table.  Who knew you could celebrate in style with school supplies?  Have a colorful weekend!

Color Without The Paint

There are so many ways that you can add color to your home, and you don’t even have to paint.

In this space, the ‘wall color’ is acheived by wrapping  a variety of fun fabrics around embroidery hoops.  How cool is that?  The throw pillows and lampshades also provide a terrific dose of mix-and-match color.

And don’t underestimate the power of books as they can be a huge source of color.  Here, I love how the chair’s patchwork fabric ties in with the hues on the bookcase.

If you’re working on a kitchen remodel, consider a colored appliance.  A stove like this canary yellow model by AGA, becomes a great focal point.   For me, nothing beats painted walls…but you can also look beyond the paint can to find creative and stylish ways to live with color.
