Bohemian Bedrooms
If you’ve been thinking that your bedroom could use a burst of color, this post will be a feast for your eyes…
…but only if you have a taste for something a little unconventional. That’s the one word that comes to mind when I think about the Bohemian design style, and I mean that in a good way.
In a world when many people jump all over whatever trend is hot at the moment, there is something very refreshing about those who do the unexpected. Bohemian rooms are an eclectic mix of vivid colors, patterns, retro and vintage pieces, and global influences. These spaces are always unexpected and definitely eye-catching.

Some people say that color relaxes them. If you’re one of those people, a Bohemian bedroom may be perfect for you. Start with a traditional/vintage headboard or bed {you can find one at thrift stores, flea markets and on eBay}. Then, pile on the colorful fabrics – bedspreads, blankets, quilts and throw pillows. You can paint the room with a vivid or subtle color, but be sure to include colorful wall art, area rugs and/or lampshades in a great color.
With the Boho style, just about any fashion accessory can be turned into accessories for your room: jewelry, scarfs, handbags and hats. Bohemian is all about personal expression. It’s a look that is artsy, unique and it embraces the beauty of imperfection.

No keeping up with trends here. It’s about doing what you want {in a colorful way} to create a a place that is pleasing and relaxing to you — that’s what makes the Bohemian style a great choice for your bedroom.
Bohemian Style
If you love color, pattern, vintage and thrift store finds, and you’re perfectly OK with imperfection, then you’ll love the bohemian style.
Like many fans of the boho style, I love that it’s relaxed and looks lived in. It’s a style that’s all about comfort and personal expression, which is why bohemian decor is always so colorful. And forget about matchy-matchy! The goal here is to use items that don’t necessarily go together — as if you’ve picked up pieces along your travels.

You can create a beautiful bohemian table for the holidays or any celebration just by mixing and matching chairs and/or dinner plates. And create a colorful chandelier by adding colored crystals to your existing fixture. Photo below from bandanamom.com.

The bohemian style is also defined by rich pattern, texture and multi-cultural fabrics.

The best thing about bohemian is that there are no rules. Just have fun and let your creative side shine through.
Bohemian Style {In Pink}
I just had a color revelation: I really like pink! I love many colors, although purple — lilac to be exact — is my utmost favorite. But lately, I find myself being drawn to pretty pink rooms {and things} like these:
{I just love the boho chic designs of warymeyers}
{One of my favorite pink spaces: designer Betsey Johnson’s NYC apartment}
{Like the room. Love the purple ceiling! Photo from bing.}
Go global! When you combine orange with pink (above), it creates an exotic feel, as in a Moroccan or Indian inspired space. Design by Barbara Chambers. I also love pink when it’s used in a bohemian style, as many of these pictures show. Pink is such a carefree color so it always looks great in a relaxed, gypsy-inspired space.
I don’t have a pink room in my home {That’s hard to do with the hubby plus three sons} but here are some of my pink things…
Have you ever had a color-scheme revelation? I’d love to hear about it!
Bohemian Inspiration
There is never a shortage of color inspiration in Bohemian interiors.
The Boho look is my favorite go-to style when I want to show clients that using a mix of colorful furnishings can be comfortable and elegant.
Beautiful interiors don’t always have to be about flawless symmetry, limited hues, and brand newness. Character comes from those things that are colorful, just a little bit quirky, and {gasp!} imperfect.

Bohemian Hues and Global Textiles
Be sure to read my Living Style column this month over at Sherwin-Williams’ STIR.
My latest story explores global-ethnic influences on the Bohemian design style, and I had the pleasure of interviewing two colorful and inspiring entrepreneurs:
Cristi Ambroson, owns Houston-based Tessera. Cristi regularly travels to Central Asia {and Peru} to hand-pick items for her business which includes textiles, such as suzanis and ikats, from Uzbekistan.
Based in London, Eva Sonaike owns a home furnishings label that bears her name. Eva sells luxury cushions and other unique items made with textiles from her native country of Nigeria.
Global-ethnic textiles are becoming very popular. They’re more widely available these days, and that’s having a huge impact on interior and fashion design. More people are becoming familiar with and inspired by the colors, patterns and history of these amazing fabrics.

UP NEXT: It’s Christmas in July…and I’m giving away something!
Bohemian Bedrooms For Girls
With a fun mix of colors and cultures, creating a Bohemian Bedroom could be the perfect way to bring out your child’s unique personality.

Bohemian spaces are a blend of modern, vintage and global-ethnic furnishings. This look is casual, free flowing and can take your child beyond the expected design boundaries.

As our world “grows smaller,” tribal textiles and other ethnic accents are becoming the focus of the boho style. This gives us the opportunity to teach our children about other cultures, countries and traditions.

Color is also an important element to this style. Vibrant hues such as pink, red, green, purple and sapphire can be paired with calming earth tones to create a balanced and pretty color scheme.

Also, don’t forget the art of display. Jewelry, hair accessories and favorite clothing items can be artfully arranged and hung on pretty hooks or hangers.
