Mid-Century Modern Hues

The 1950′s and 60′s was indeed a colorful time in history.  During this period, it appears that color-phobia wasn’t much of an issue as homeowners used vibrant hues liberally.  After all, it was a post-war era and there was much to be happy about.

A look back can be comical or maybe even nostalgic, but there is no doubt that this period influences today’s interiors as we continue to be inspired by classic streamlined furniture and bold hues.

These photos of present-day interiors are reminders that fun colors aren’t just for kids.

  1. I’ve always considered myself to be into more traditional sorts of design, but I have to say that these pictures with modern designs really appealed to me! Love all the fabulous colors!

  2. I love seeing all these colorful spaces and they all have such great vintage pieces in them. I’m going to have to borrow that first pic (with credit, of course) for my Orange Crush post next week. Hope you’re enjoying the long weekend!

  3. I agree! It has come back, as all things in design do. I remember my sister’s bedroom in hot orange and yellow flowers on one wall and orange and yellow stripes on the other walls..wild and GROOVY! No, there wasn’t any fear in decorating..my room had three shades of purple and pink woodwork..so I am enjoying the color surge and use color when I can!
I just did my 18 year olds baasement “apartment” in a Tommy Bahama style with paint in seagreen and lagoon blues on his walls, with some palm prints and a funky lamp in ocean blue. I got the biggest hug from him tonight!

  4. You have a point, Libby. Maybe not as vivid back then, at least not for wall colors. And I do remember browns, but for me, that was in the early 70′s.

  5. It all comes ’round, right?
Your choice of colors for these photos is just great: that green and magenta from Apt. Therapy is wonderful. But, do you think we, years later, are brightening the colors as we look back to mid-century modern? Were they THAT colorful? I tend to think there were also a lot of browns, neutrals, toned down rusts: or, maybe that is what my parents had in the house…..
