Celebrate Fall {Sneak Peek}!
Here’s a sneak peek at some really colorful and fun Fall Party ideas that I’ll be sharing with you soon! This is my favorite time of year, and it’s all about color. So, let’s celebrate!
Third Place Colors?
Did you know that some of the most popular, beautiful colors are considered third rate?
{CORAL by browndavis.com}
Well…not exactly. However, as it relates to the color wheel, tertiary colors — those hues that result from mixing a primary and secondary color — are technically in third place.

Colors such as coral, turquoise, chartreuse and periwinkle are all tertiary colors, and I think these hues make the most beautiful statement when used in a room.

You can read more about these colors in my latest story over at Sherwin-Williams STIR, which also includes some great insight by Erin Olson from House of Turquoise.
Red Hot Ideas
Look what I found at Marshall’s:
Marshall’s is definitely one of those places where you need patience to rummage through stuff, but every once in a while I find something perfect, like these red peep-toe pumps. Coincidentally, I just wrote a story over at Houzz.com about using the color red.
Just like a red dress, stilettos or peep-toe pumps, a red room can be elegant and sexy. This is a great color for a dining room where you want guests to be comfortable, attentive and ready for a lively conversation…
…and red is perfect in the bedroom because it is the color of love and passion. Also, why not paint your powder room red? Your home will have an element of surprise:

Mood Indigo: Dark Blue Rooms
Indigo is the sixth color of the rainbow. Our eyes see it as a deep shade of blue, but this color is actually in between blue and violet.

Indigo will make a bold statement in your home and serve as a terrific backdrop for brighter, vivid accent colors as well as gold and silver. Definitely a way to set the mood!
eDesign: California Dreamin’
I recently finished an eDesign project for Annette, who lives in southern California. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to design four rooms in her home, which was a blast because Annette is definitely not afraid of color and she already had great furniture pieces. For your inspiration, I’m sharing two of the projects in this post.
In the family room, we did a ‘Palm Springs Chic’ design with cheery yellow and gorgeous green wall colors {June Day and Picnic, both by Sherwin Williams}. The look also included fun, retro accessories — some of them from Jonathan Adler.
For her master bedroom, Annette wanted a glam look that included turquoise with a splash of jewel tones. The design included a turquoise ceiling {Belize by SW}, gray walls {Functional Gray by SW} and pops of red. Below is my computer rendering of the space:
When I last heard from Annette she was in the process of painting her home, although the bedroom is already done. She says that she and her husband are really enjoying the turquoise ceiling! I hope to have photos to share with you soon.

Pink Epiphany
I just had a color revelation: I really like pink! I love many colors, although purple — lilac to be exact — is my utmost favorite. But lately, I find myself being drawn to pretty pink spaces {and things} like these:
{I just love the boho chic designs of warymeyers}
{One of my favorite pink spaces: designer Betsey Johnson’s NYC apartment}
{Like the room. Love the purple ceiling! Photo from bing.}
Go global! When you combine orange with pink (above), it creates an exotic feel, as in a Moroccan or Indian inspired space. Design by Barbara Chambers.

I don’t have a pink room in my home {That’s hard to do with the hubby plus three sons} but here are some of my pink things…
Have you ever had a color revelation? I’d love to hear about it!
Turquoise And Green
I know that for many of you the weather has been sweltering. It’s been pretty warm here too on the East coast. This is usually the time of year when I start to crave the watery hues of the ocean.
Turquoise and green is one of my favorite color schemes. It’s cool, refreshing and always stylish.
{alluminare}
If you’d like to try this color palette, try experimenting with different types of green. Emerald, spearmint, lime green, wasabi green and olive green are some to try.
So, if you’ve been burning up out there, I hope this post has inspired you to create a space where you can chill out and cool down.

Color Scheme: Purple And Orange
Often it is the boldest of color schemes that yield the greatest benefits.
Pairing purple and orange is certainly a courageous choice but consider this: Purple is the color of royalty, introspection and spirituality. While orange is associated with creativity, energy and joyfulness.
Even in their lighter tints of lavender and peach, together these hues create a majestic warmth unlike no other color duo. It’s a look and feel that’s perfect for when you want to create…or just meditate.
Instead of a traditional purple, try periwinkle {as shown above}. This is a cool, bluish purple that looks great with deep golden oranges, such as ginger. Photo from decorpad.com.

Centerpiece: Inspired By The Colors Of India
Today, I’m sharing a ‘global chic’ centerpiece that you can use for any occasion, any time of the year.
As you may already know, I love perusing antique and thrift stores for tabletop items and accessories. On a recent excursion, I spotted these:
Vintage Indian elephant candlesticks made by porcelain manufacturer Fitz and Floyd {$5.00 each!}.
I’ve always been intrigued with elephant stands and figurines although I haven’t owned any until now. However, when I was younger I remember my mother had been pining for a rather large elephant stand. When she finally purchased it, she crowned it with a round piece of glass. It’s been an end table in her living room ever since.
I’ve found a special place for my elephants in my dining room, but first I couldn’t resist using one of them for a centerpiece.
The milk glass vases were $1.00 each {also from the thrift store}. For the rose ‘bouquet,’ I used two dozen roses; the greenery is from shrubs in my yard. My pink and gold table runner makes a nice ‘global’ finishing touch.
One of the things I love best about floral designs for home entertaining — when the party’s over, I can enjoy them in my office — at least for a little while.
You can find elephant candlesticks on eBay.
